Over the last few years, in addition to K-Dramas, I’ve also become really fond of anime. One of the first shows I was introduced to was Black Butler.

This anime is a sort of dark comedy, combined with elements of crime, mystery and fantasy. It is drawn in an anime style that is geared for women – in that the male characters (specifically Sebastian) are drawn to be very attractive, and with more detail, while the female characters are left to be a little more generic. Think Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon, swoooooon. Don’t get me wrong, I know tons of guys who enjoy this anime as much as girls, I just wanted to call out the style.

Essentially, this series follows Ciel Phantomhive, the thirteen-year-old head of the Phantomhive family, an aristocratic family known as the Queen’s Watchdog, and is tasked with solving crimes in London’s underworld. Ciel forms a contract with Sebastian Michaelis, a demon who has taken on the disguise of Ciel’s butler, to seek revenge against those who killed his parents and resulted in him being kidnapped and tortured.

Below, you can watch the entire first episode of Black Butler on YouTube, to get an idea of what it’s like. Since the series aired in 2008, it is also completely free to watch on Netflix, Hulu, Funimation, and Crunchyroll – to name a few.

Warning – there are dark elements and demons in this anime and while it stars a 13-year-old boy, anime tends to tackle more mature subjects than you might expect – so depending on how you feel about that, or if you have kids, just keep that in mind – it might not be appropriate for all audiences.

Final Warning – if you are even the slightest bit into tea, this show will make you want delicious teas constantly – so, get your favorite cup of Earl Grey and settle in.
